83rd Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea

In May 1942, Japanese forces had rapidly expanded across the western Pacific, capturing key strategic territories including Hong Kong, Malaya, Borneo, and Singapore. Their advance toward Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea posed a direct threat to Australia and Allied positions in the region.

The Battle of the Coral Sea marked a turning point. Fought entirely by carrier-based aircraft—the first naval battle of its kind—United States forces, supported by Australian naval elements, successfully halted the Japanese advance. This decisive engagement helped secure Port Moresby and prevented further attacks toward Australia.

On the 83rd anniversary of the battle, the Australian American Association – Canberra Division commemorated this shared history with a ceremony at the Australian–American Memorial. The service brought together representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Australia, the Embassy of Japan, the RSL, Defence, and the broader community to honour those who served and sacrificed.

We were honoured to be joined by Chargée d’Affaires Erika Olson, representatives of the Japanese Embassy, and our longstanding partners from the RSL. The ceremony was thoughtfully led by MC Adrian Dolahenty, whose stewardship ensured a respectful and meaningful commemoration.

The day’s events continued with a commemorative dinner, bringing members and guests together to reflect on the enduring bonds forged during the battle and strengthened over generations. The gathering also marked an important moment for the Association as we hosted the event at the Canberra Services Club, our new home, continuing the tradition of remembrance and mateship.

Together, we honoured the legacy of those who served and reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Australia, the United States, and our regional partners.

Lest we forget. 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇯🇵
