84th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea

We were honoured to stand alongside the U.S. Embassy in Australia and distinguished guests to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea – a defining moment of shared sacrifice and enduring partnership.

The day’s commemorations brought together veterans and dignitaries including U.S. Embassy Chargée d’Affaires Erika Olson, LCDR Brett Grady, His Excellency Kazuhiro Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Australia, visiting delegates from the Cumberland RSL Sub-Branch, and our AAA guests in the spirit of remembrance and cooperation shared across our communities.

Chargée d’Affaires Erika Olson joined representatives of the Australian American Association for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian American Memorial, paying tribute to those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom.

The evening’s commemorative dinner at the Mercure Hotel also featured remarks from our Patron Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d) and the President of the Australian American Association – Canberra Division Alicia Doherty, as well as a moving vale honouring the late Second World War veteran Allan Wichelo for his service and legacy.

We extend our sincere thanks to the U.S. Embassy in Australia for their continued friendship and dedication to support the shared history between our nations. We also acknowledge and thank all those who contributed to these events, including the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General, the United States Marine Corps, the Royal Australian Navy Band, the Federation Guard, Cumberland RSL Sub-Branch, the team at Russell Offices, our service MC Kevin Quarderer, and our dedicated volunteers whose efforts make these commemorations and associated events possible.

Lest we forget. 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇯🇵
