Governor‑General Reception Honouring the Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration

The Australian American Association – Canberra Division was honoured to attend a reception hosted by Her Excellency Ms Sam Mostyn the Governor‑General of Australia at Government House, ahead of the commemorative service marking the 84th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The evening brought together veterans and members of the Cumberland RSL Sub-Branch, alongside representatives of the Association, in recognition of a shared legacy of service and sacrifice. In her remarks, the Governor‑General acknowledged the Sub-Branch’s longstanding commitment to veteran welfare and commemoration, and paid tribute to those who have served—including the late Second World War veteran Allan Wichelo.

We were also privileged to be joined by our patron Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d), Major Matt Jones (Ret’d), President of the Cumberland RSL Sub-Branch, and Ms Alicia Doherty, President of the AAACBR.

On behalf of the AAA Canberra, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Her Excellency and the entire Government House team for such a memorable and generous evening. For many members of the Cumberland RSL Sub-Branch, it was their first visit to Government House, made all the more special by the warmth, hospitality, and genuine generosity shown throughout the evening.

Her Excellency was exceptionally generous with her time, engaging in meaningful conversations and sharing stories with veterans and guests alike—ensuring everyone felt welcome and valued. The event was a fitting reflection of the enduring Australia–United States alliance and the bonds of remembrance, mateship, and service that continue to unite our communities.
